2019-2020
Safe-Tober By Sophie Bright Editorial Editor ⠀⠀⠀⠀COVID-19 is really kicking our butts this year. It's taken away our social life and now it’s taking away our opportunity to eat candy and knock on people’s doors in cute and crazy costumes. ⠀⠀⠀⠀Halloween has always granted us the opportunity to see friends and participate in fun traditions that have been practiced since the 1930’s. Trick-or-Treating is by far the most well known. ⠀⠀⠀⠀Due to recent guidelines put into place by the City of Long Beach, Trick-or-Treating has been taken off the table. ⠀⠀⠀⠀However according to our most recently conducted Millikan Corydon Questionnaire, the Millikan community expressed a divide between people who are not celebrating and those who are. One person who is having a small celebration is Luke Fleishman, a 9th grade COMPASS student. He said “I have had this group I've hung out with all through COVID-19, and we haven't had any complications, we are having a party.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀On the other side of things, there are people who are making sure to stay as safe as possible and to just simply stay at home and not do anything. ⠀⠀⠀⠀“No, I won't be doing anything.” Says a SEGA 10th grader Seamus Fitzpatrick. “Staying safe away from big crowds of people.” The City of Long Beach launched a press release on this topic and specified what the protocols are for this season. It was said that “Door-to-door trick-or-treating should also be avoided as it can be very difficult to maintain proper physical distancing, ensure that everyone is appropriately masked to prevent disease spread and because sharing food is not recommended.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀Although there is a small portion of people who are planning on trick or treating safely, it is encouraged to be as safe as possible. ⠀⠀⠀⠀May all your quarantine festivities be spookily safe this year. Happy Halloween everyone! PHOTO COURTESY OF @TSTARS ON PINTEREST These are some cute Halloween masks that represent this year’s Halloween season really well.

November 10, 2020Dear Corydon editor In Feature, Issue 2 (published November 3, 2020), Sophie Bright wrote an article titled "Safe-Tober." Obviously with Halloween a big point on everyone's mind, and it have gone and past I have to think about the people, Luke Fleishman, and Seamus Fitzpatrick's decisions. As Sophie stated, the city of Long Beach took action to end the process of trick or treating. Student Luke Fleishman went to a party with his friends he has hungout with all through quarantine, "with no complications" he added. As much as someone can criticize Luke for seeing people during a pandemic, he has kept his circle small and has not had any covid complications. Personally I agree with his choice, as I see my same group of friends almost daily. I do not deserve Luke deserves any scrutiny if he gets any. As for Seamus, I also agree and stand with his decision. Seamus, "[is] staying safe away from big crowds of people." I do not know if he hangs out with friends regularly or what his situation is, but I applaud him for choosing to stay home and realizing not taking an unnecessary risk. Even though I applaud Seamus decision, I also stand with Luke's decision that is on the other spectrum for choices to be mad about going or not going to social events.Sincerely, Joseph Daniele, Grade 11

In FEATURE - ISSUE 2 / 2020, Sophie Bright wrote an article titled “Safe-Tober” The article discussed the safety guidelines set in by long beach for a safe haloween during the current pandemic. It did a good job covering the two different viewpoints on Halloween this year. You could have added some alternatives to the traditional passing out of candy such as using the please take one bowl or even sending Halloween goodie bags to your neighbors as alternatives to trick or treating. You could also have covered social distancing activities that could've been done with friends from the safety of your own homes such as streaming horror movies to everyone, playing Halloween-themed games online, or even video chatting with each other and telling horror stories while everyone is in their own houses. Then for the people who still want to go out and trick or treat mention some steps, they could follow to minimize the spread of covid such as maintaining social distancing and making sure to wash your hands or wear gloves when receiving candy. Overall, it was a great article that expressed the concern of how COVID effected Halloween this year and covered the concerns of both people who wanted to stay quarantined for Halloween, and people who wanted to go out and celebrate Halloween, but could include suggestions that would benefit both sides and provide alternatives or safety practices to use in either situation,

In Issue 2/2020 (published November 3, 2020), Sophie Bright wrote an article titled "Safe-Tober." The article talks about how Covid-19 guidelines have effected this Halloween and bring up how some people will still celebrate Halloween and how some won't celebrate. I think this article was great and informative and the title was perfect,as it ties in with safeness of Halloween. I didn't attend trick-or-treating or celebrate Halloween this year and that is why I am on the safe side of things. I have some concerns which are how the article doesn't talk too much about the covid guidelines that Long Beach has given as this can give people a better understanding of why trick-or-treating has been taken off the table. I suggest next time to add statements from long beach people besides the students of Millikan. Not saying not to include the students of Millikan but to also add outside people of Millikan. Maybe an adult's point of view as they will give a more informative reason why and why not to trick-or-treat, someone with a better understanding. Overall was a great read, and want to thank you for telling me more on what people did and how they approached this Halloween.

In Issue 2/2020 (published November 3, 2020), Sophie Bright wrote an article titled “Safe-Tober” This article mentions The City of Long Beach launching protocols and safety rules for Halloween 2020, and she shows how individuals are celebrating this spooky season with the launch of the safety rules. She did an amazing job with this article capturing students perspectives on how individuals and their families celebrate this year with safety protocols put into place. The 2 different individuals that were included in the article had two different opinions, which shows the perspectives on how they react to the dangers of Covid-19. Thank you for writing this article, I was interested to learn about how individuals celebrated Halloween during this uncertain time we're living in. 1 correction that I have for the editor is the way you mentioned Trick-or-Treating being "taken off the table." I believe that families were given the option to go out and Trick-or-Treat, making sure they follow the important guidelines such as staying 6 feet away from others, wearing a mask, and using hand sanitizer. As holiday are approaching, I would recommend doing something similar to this article but with the holidays Thanksgiving, and Christmas. It would be very interesting to have a glimpse on how individuals are celebrating these holidays.

I Appraise the fact that that you care for others health by giving us information on what the city of long beach is doing to keep everyone safe thus halloween and it doesn't misinform us in any way. Im very concern for the people that think its okay to hang out with their friends just because they haven't caught the virus (yet). Correction- some people have still gone out to trick or treat this year and long beach didn't do anything about it. I suggest you to put down some ideas on how to trick or treat safely for those who were going out this halloween night. What is something you suggest people doing when they go out with friends and family? Their is many occasions when people don't care and still go out there unsafely to do activities that can cause them and the people around them to catch the virus. We have the to all be safe and help our community to stay safe from things like the virus so we wont be stuck in our houses any longer. Due to people going out being unsafe we are closed to be shut down again. Let help and follow the rules.
